The short answer
Slack does not record huddles: there is no Record button, and you cannot get an audio file out of Slack. To record a Slack huddle on a Mac with everyone’s audio, record it on your own machine. MeetingRecorder is a free menu-bar app for Mac that records your microphone and the huddle’s audio together and saves an audio file on your Mac. Nothing joins the huddle, and it works on any Slack plan, including huddles with guests and people outside your workspace.
Option 1 — Slack’s AI huddle notes
This is the closest thing Slack has. Someone in the huddle turns on AI notes, and when the huddle ends Slack creates a canvas with a summary, action items and a transcript.
- Good: nothing to install, and the notes land in the channel.
- Annoying: paid Slack plans only, everyone is notified when notes start, and you get notes — not an audio file you can replay.
- Doesn’t help in huddles with guests or people outside your workspace: AI notes are not available there.
Option 2 — macOS screen recording (⌘⇧5)
Press ⌘⇧5, choose to record the screen, and start. On macOS 15 and 26 the built-in tool records your microphone but not the audio coming out of Slack, so you end up with a video where you can hear yourself and no one else.
macOS 27 fixes the silence: open Options in the ⌘⇧5 toolbar and turn on Include System Audio. What you get is a screen video rather than an audio file — large, with no transcript or summary — and you have to remember the option before the huddle starts. More on this in recording system audio on macOS.
Option 3 — a local meeting recorder (both sides, no bot)
A menu-bar app records your mic and the huddle’s audio together and saves the file to a folder on your Mac. Because nothing joins the huddle, there is no bot in the participant list and no dependency on your Slack plan.
With MeetingRecorder the flow is:
- Click Start Recording in the menu bar before or during the huddle.
- It captures both sides of the call — your mic and the huddle’s audio — as one mix, or separate tracks.
- When the huddle ends, one click gives you a transcript with speaker labels and a short summary with action items.
Huddles work the same in the Slack desktop app and in a browser: the recorder captures the audio like any other sound your Mac plays. Everything stays local unless you choose to transcribe, and there’s no account to set up.
Which should you use?
- Paid plan, members only, and notes are enough: Slack’s AI huddle notes.
- You want a quick screen video: ⌘⇧5 (turn on Include System Audio on macOS 27 to hear the other side).
- You want the audio kept on your Mac with a transcript — on any plan, with anyone: a local meeting recorder.
